“What strikes me… is what looks like the smallest gesture — pictures by children — are all that remain of the human face, which otherwise disappears. In the context of Korea, these are really quite big gestures. These paintings are important — they change the narrative of ‘we cannot speak to each other; there is no relationship; it’s all over’.”

-  Duncan Morrw, Ulster University

WHY
NORTHERN IRELAND?

Though far in distance from the Korean Peninsula, Northern Ireland shares a common history of division and conflict. As the capital, Belfast has also been the site of countless encounters of political change and reconciliation between communities. In particular, Ulster University’s campus in the city centre opened in 2023 as a symbol of peace and hope, marking the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement. The exhibit aims to serve as a platform for translocal learning and reciprocal empowerment of members of civil society in divided societies, especially through art and peace education.
